Lanai Boat Trip Recap
Over my Hawaiian vacation my family took a boat trip to Lanai. Here's a short video I took of the Spinner Dolphin pod we saw off the coast taken with a GoPro camera:
Spinner Dolphins are about 2/3 smaller than their more famous cousins Bottlenose Dolphins. The largest pod of Spinner Dolphins in Hawaii is off the coast of Lanai- about 300 dolphins. They are active at night and early in the morning and sleep most of the day. When marine creatures sleep they are half awake. The dolphins I saw were up playing when most of the rest were sleeping, so there were about 40 swimming around the boat. Spinner dolphins can't survive in captivity for more than 2 days- they die of depression when separated from their group.
We also saw lots of sea turtles- and I got to swim a lot when I was snorkeling. They live for at least 100 years.
here's a pic of one that I didn't take
he's eating a snack!
On the trip we also saw a Hawaiian Monk Seal. Most seals like frigid water but monk seals like warm water, they also like fried chicken. 1400 Hawaiian monk seals left on the planet and even less in the Mediterranean, they're one of the most endangered animals in the world (probably they are all dying of seal heart disease because of all those deep fried snacks they eat).
